On our quest to find more fashion-forward, sustainable pieces, we discovered the benefits of modal fabric. Modal is an alternative to synthetic fabric that is sustainable, biodegradable, breathable, silky and smooth. Synthetic fabrics are made using chemically-intensive methods that pollute our air, land and oceans. Modal is naturally derived from beech trees and its manufacturing processes are closed loop, which means that any of the solvents used in processing are captured and reused. The water needed throughput this practice gets recycled as well. Modal is manufactured from a renewable crop, so the raw material is considered carbon neutral if it is taken from a responsibly managed source. As a quick fact, it requires less land per ton than cotton fibers and has a water consumption level that’s ten to twenty times less than what is needed for cotton. One of the major producers of this fabric is Lenzing Modal.
